I propose a new rule for politics: If it can fit on a bumper sticker, it's much too generalized and simple to be public policy. |

| My monthly update |
[Jul. 31st, 2009|11:54 pm] |
It took me far too long to realize that the true hilarity of DM of the Rings (which is a must read for anybody who likes D&D and/or Tolkien) is the author's notes that make humorous observations about D&D. The comic is pretty funny throughout, taking its humor from jabs at DMs who railroad and talk too much, jokes about overcomplicated rules, lighter jabs at players who obviously have ADD, and the occasional poke at the plot of LOTR. And at first, the author's notes are standard and/or just not funny. Then the author started throwing these fun little observations about D&D into the notes and they kind of started overshadowing the comic IMO, which I find unusual as most author's notes on webcomics tend to bore me to death. Anyway, I highly recommend DM of the rings and I think you should check it out.
Otherwise, on a totally different topic, I would like to say something to all the people on the internet. Hell, scratch those last three words. I am a person who tries very hard to live and let live. I try not to judge the lifestyles of others, because it is none of my business, and even if it was my business I'd probably say, "more power to you as long as you're not hurting anybody." I realize this is not the reaction many people receive when they lead an atypical lifestyle, or really make any lifestyle choice that is different from those around them, and I empathize. I see how they might get angry and feel like lashing back. But y'know what? Turning around and judging other people is not the proper reaction. Telling everybody typical that your different way is the true/right/better way and that typical folk are unnatural/wrong/sheeple/fooling themselves/can't think for themselves/etc is just annoying and accomplishes nothing. It's not just that I take personal offense. It's that being a huge hypocrite about judgmental attitudes doesn't help anybody, and doesn't break down those attitudes at all. If anything, it reinforces them. It trivializes the idea that more than one way can be right, proper, and natural, and that all of those ways and all of those people can coexist peacefully.
In summary, to the typical and the atypical alike: Saying that something (certainly if that something does not harm others) is wrong for everybody just because it's not for you just makes you look like a douchebag, and you're probably wrong. |

1. Up is a good movie. I'm sure everybody is shocked. I mean, Pixar, maker of fabulous movies, making a fabulous movie? Whodathunkit? But seriously, the old guy's character development and plot is actually fairly complex for a kid's movie/kid-accessible movie, especially the (surprisingly, even for Pixar) subtle moral of the story about PROBABLY NOT A SPOILER BUT JUST MARKING TO MAKE SURE going on with your life after you've grieved enough. Feel free to go late and skip the previews though. The only benefit that a bunch of trailers for shitty kids' movies could have is to show you how amazing Up is by comparison.
2. Trolls are cute. Sometimes it is fun to feed them, as long as you remember to pull away when their teeth are getting close to your fingers.
3. Sometimes you can tell that a piece of advice is good for you simply because it's hard to hear and even harder to accept. |

I KNOW I NEVER DO THESE BUT (from firefly99) The first TEN people to comment in this post get to request a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing from me. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level. If you absolutely can't write, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to offer drawings or icons or something instead.

I don't want to take the FFVII journals off my friends list, but I might have to, because I'm sick of the spoilers. I've already pre-ordered the American Advent Children Complete and nobody can just wait the damn month before posting summaries and screenshots from their imported or pirated copies out in the open. |

Taken from firefly99
01. Choose an episode of anime or television series you have on your computer. Make sure you're certain you want that one, you cannot change your mind once you complete this step. DO NOT TELL YOUR FLIST WHAT YOU CHOSE. (I'm gonna do the same as Fly and pick a couple.) 02. Make note of how long the episode is. 03. Ask your flist to choose a time between 00:00 and whatever the length of your episode is. Be specific, (ie: 19:11, 21:09, 02:42) 04. Make them an icon using THAT FRAME ONLY no matter what it is. And remember, you can only use that ONE episode you chose previously, even if the person posting isn't familiar with it.

| Watchmen - short and sweet |
[Mar. 9th, 2009|11:55 pm] |
I went and saw the Watchmen movie on Friday. Great film. Very much Do Want (and would recommend!). There were a few hints of...what I can only describe as "Zack Snyder stink" on it (mostly in the particular stylized violence that he specializes in and a tad too much slo-mo), but the comic was adapted faithfully (and in fact there were a few times when what we in TV Tropes land refer to as "adaptation distillation" occurred). And frankly, the level of faithfulness was the ONLY thing that could justify how long it was, but I'm glad they didn't fuck up the story in order to make it short. It really got me jazzed about Watchmen again, especially since Rorschach's actor was SO GOOD. =D |

| Dissidia |
[Feb. 21st, 2009|04:06 pm] |
A few things about the Square Enix crossover beat-'em-up Dissidia:
- Hooray, something worthwhile and fun for my PSP that isn't Crisis Core - I get to play as a shirtless Sephiroth and kick the crap out of any Final Fantasy main character or villain that I want in the battle arena - The music is epic - You can unlock charactersANYTHING in the order that you want - The characterization seems decent so far - You can play through the game levels in any order - You can level up characters in the arena before sending them into story mode fights - FUCK YOU KEFKA YOU ARE SO FUCKING BROKEN YOU CAN DODGE EVERYTHING I THROW AT YOU AND DO INESCAPABLE LONG RANGE ATTACKS THAT DO SO MUCH DAMAGE WHAT THE FUCK seriously there are hard and nigh-unbeatable bosses in this game but Kefka was by far the worst in the FFX level at least |

Woohoo, my birthday is here. 19 isn't a big or important one - there aren't many big ones after 18 besides 21 - but I intend on making this next year of my life rock as hard as the last one. To celebrate, I am going to Kyoto in (affordable) style for five days. Gonna see as much as I can and report back. Have a great Christmas everybody. |

Well, about five more weeks to go. And then straight into next semester. @_@ Oh well, I still love living here, even though I'll be super happy to come home.
If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, (even if we don't speak often or ever) please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me.
It can be anything you want - good or bad - BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE.
When you're finished, post this little paragraph in your LJ and see what your friends come up with. |

Which Colossal Death Robot Are You? Brought to you by Rum and Monkey
Holy Prime Directive, you're Robocop!
Well, you're neither colossal, nor technically a robot, but your arthritic lurching and dubious morals have found their way into the hearts of futuristic rebels and children everywhere. You walk through fire, catch bullets from the air, and you never, ever smile. Combine this with an abstract, almost random concept of duty and honour, and you have a police officer one cannot fail to adore.
Thank you, Robocop. |

Obama won. He is now President Obama. Cool. I'm ready for change. One party swept the whole legislative branch as well as the presidency. ...Not as cool. I don't like that much, no matter which party it is. But whatever, we will get through what ever comes to pass.
So California's Prop 8 passed. That sucks. Hopefully it will just get struck down as unlawful again and people can stop fucking trying to run others' lives. Voters cared more about the happiness of chickens (prop 2 IIRC) than gays? What a world.
Anyway, in the world of shit that doesn't matter ( the following is about Mary Sues/fandom so feel free to move along if you've been reading for my comments on the real world ) |

I had the most awesome trip to Tokyo on Monday. One of the classes I'm taking is basically a Japanese pop culture class, and our teacher met a few of us students in Omotesando and showed us where all the cool places were. Then I headed up to Ikebukuro for super geeky fun. I spent more money than I probably should have but now I have a bunch of cool shit to show for it. :P
Also, I happened to catch the Gurren Lagann movie, like, almost by accident. It just happened to be playing at a theater by the train station in Ikebukuro, and this thing came out almost two months ago. And I haven't been able to find it here in Mito, so I was like, 'Fuck yessss I'm gonna go see that because I'm not gonna have another chance on the big screen.' It meant I had to take the last train home, but it was worth it. Although I must say, I have mixed feelings about it. Much like the new Eva movie, it was strikingly similar to the television show, except that it didn't even look all re-done like You Are Not Alone. From this you might gather that it is meant more for new fans, except that almost all of the character introductions from Kittan to Rossiu to the rest of Dai Gurren Dan are done through a montage in the middle. Which led me to believe that it was really more for people who had already seen it. Some of the cuts were improvements as they made the story flow more smoothly and efficiently, but sometimes it was just too brutal. Perhaps trying to get so far into the series was their downfall; I believe they went almost to episode 15 or so in the span of two hours. Still, it made the final boss fight even more awesome because they were fighting all four of the beastmen generals at once. The fact is, I enjoyed it even though the pacing seemed more like a high quality clip show than a movie. The fights were still amazing, Kamina was still fucking awsome and manly, and one of the cool new things came at the very beginning: the movie STARTS with the backstory of the Spiral King. Which was a fine alternative to Simon's alternate future thingy. |

| Japan Post 1 |
[Sep. 19th, 2008|12:29 pm] |
Well I've been in Japan for more than a week now, and...well, there is so much to say, and yet so few words. Where to start? What to say? So far I have had to get used to living alone (well, with roommates, but I am sure you know what I mean) and basically supporting myself for the first time, in a different country to boot. The big trips so far were to karaoke and a summer festival. The weather is rainy and warm. The bugs are huge. The food is often quite foreign. And every time I open my mouth I realize how much what I know of Japanese is dwarfed by what I don't know. It sounds like I'm complaining, but I am actually very happy to be here. All of these are simply realities that I am coming to terms with. I mean, I'm in JAPAN. =D |

| This is not directed at anybody on my flist |
[Jul. 6th, 2008|10:10 pm] |
One of the most important skills is being able to take criticism. Another of the most important - one which is, unfortunately, not as widely stressed - is the ability to give good criticism.
Ode to the Asshole Especially those on the internet
Even if your point is valid, you can still be an asshole about it. And it doesn't help anybody.
Even if I concede 100% that you are right and I am wrong, you are still an asshole.
Even if my best is worthless, you're still an asshole.
Even if you are better than me at something, I am probably better than you at something else. You are not better than me. Also, you are an asshole.
Even though you have the right to express your opinion, that doesn't mean you have to be smug, condescending, sarcastic, blunt, or mean. You're being an asshole.
Stop justifying it. Be nicer or just accept that you're an asshole.
And stop trying to pull me down to your level because it's really tempting. You're what's wrong with this country, and this world, you mean, selfish prick. You asshole. |

| SRS STUFF |
[Jul. 3rd, 2008|02:46 pm] |
Alright, I'm gonna skip the talkative post and get right to the meat: I'm sure you heard about California's legalization of gay marriage and you probably have an opinion about it. If your opinion is favorable, I'm guessing your opinion is unfavorable towards the initiative on the 2008 ballot to strike down gay marriage.
livelongnmarry is an LJ community charity auction where you can buy or sell just about any sort of thing that's geeky or fandom related and the money goes to marriage equality instead of the seller. If you buy, you can probably find something really cool and/or exclusive and/or personalized for your money. People sell care packages from different parts of the world, fanfiction, fanart, doujinshi, stuff they've made, etc. If you sell, you don't have to dig into your own wallet in order to donate, and you can probably sell something you enjoy doing (drawing, writing, composing, whatever). Even if you are not a strong supporter of gay rights (and I know a fair number of people on my flist are), I just think they have a lot of cool stuff to buy and it's good publicity for the skills you want to sell. |
